There have been a few children who have come to Neema during my time here that are not newborns. They are older. They have memories. Every thing changed for them in a second.
Little Zawadi, Shabani and Amiri all have mothers who were deemed “mentally unstable”. Amiri, the oldest of the three, is probably almost 3 years old. He’s a very clever little boy, but it’s obvious he is not really use to being around so many other little ones.
In a moment, a mere second perhaps, everything they had ever known changed.
And for some of our newborns, perhaps it was just a second. The mother decided “I can’t do this” and walked away. Maybe she didn’t even have time to try and weigh her options. Maybe she didn’t want to.
